A laparoscopic nephrectomy is an operation to remove one of the two kidneys deep in the abdomen. The kidneys filter waste and excess water from the blood to produce urine. Urine flows from the kidneys through the ureters to the bladder, where it is stored until it is ready to go to the bathroom. Laparoscopic nephrectomy requires the removal of the entire kidney through a keyhole-shaped incision in the flank, the side of the body between the ribs and hip.
