Percutaneous nephrolithotomy is a surgical procedure used to remove kidney stones that are too large to pass on their own or that do not respond to other treatments. The operation lasts three to four hours. Risks include blood in the urine, blood clots, infection, and healing problems. Recovery takes two to four weeks.
